EN12079 "Offshore Containers"

EN12079: "Offshore Containers - Design, construction, testing, inspection and marking", is a standard for offshore containers prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC280 "Offshore containers" and was released in March of 1999.

Upon release it replaced the English offshore container document BS7072 "Inspection & Repair of Offshore Containers 1989".

EN12079 is published in English, German and French languages and was developed by the European Committee for Standardisation commonly referred to as CEN which comes from the French wording "Comitè Europèen de Normalisation".

CEN Members bound to implement this European Standard are: Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

The design of Lifting sets used on Offshore Containers is not covered in the current version of EN12079, however, a revision is being prepared and the new document will include a new section covering the design of lifting sets.

All "certified" containers manufactured by OCI with certification by Det Norske Veritas (DNV) to their "Offshore Containers - Certification Notes 2.7-1" have multi certification that also covers compliance to EN12079 & the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), Maritime Safety Committee Circular (MSC) Circular 860 "Guidelines for the Approval of Offshore Containers Handled in Open Seas".
